FAQ: What do I say? Letter from a Save Red Rock Warrior:
Heather,
I want to help but before I call/email, I am going to ask an embarassing question: What do I need to say? just state my name and that I support that bill? Or do I write/explain why I feel this should pass and try to persuede with conviction? I just want to make sure I am as effective as possible and not wasting my ‘help’. 🙂
Thanks-
Andrea
Dear Andrea,
Thank you for being a warrior for Red Rock. You bring up a good question. The most effective thing to do when calling a representative is to state your name, address, action you would like them to take (in this case it’s vote YES on LWCF funding), and why you care about it. It doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler, the better. But always mention Red Rock Canyon so they understand how important it is to all of us.
Thank you!
FAQ: What is LWCF? More info from SRR Newsletter Email:
Dear Team Red Rock,
We want to inform you on some important developments in Congress and how you, the backbone of Save Red Rock, can help. Right now, Congress has an opportunity to provide permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a crucial conservation program that could have an impact right here in Red Rock Canyon. As the budget for the next year gets appropriated, Congress has it in its power to fund this program once and for all.
The LWCF was established in 1964 to buy and conserve pockets of private lands within sensitive areas and help municipalities develop parks and outdoor enhancements for improved recreation. Monies for this program come from royalties taxed on oil and gas leases, so it’s not taxpayer funded. LWCF was permanently reauthorized this February, but has yet to be funded.
In Southern Nevada alone, the LWCF has been used to purchase land to help support Spring Mountain Ranch, Valley of Fire, and Floyd Lamb State Park. It has helped construct facilities at the Red Springs Picnic Area and the Springs Preserve. We all know how much Red Rock Canyon needs support like this.
Congress could provide the certainty and funding that LWCF needs to finance Red Rock conservation projects and projects across Nevada.
Funding for LWCF already has the support of Sen. Cortez Masto, Sen. Rosen, Rep. Titus, Rep. Lee, and Rep. Horsford. But now we need them to take action.
So we’re asking you to call your Representative and ask them to prioritize full and permanent funding for LWCF through the budget appropriations process. Nevada’s Members of Congress have been wonderful supporters of Red Rock and of Nevada’s public lands, and now they need to hear from their constituents that this is important to them. LWCF is a national program that benefits state parks and federal lands in every county in the country.
Here in Nevada, it could make a huge difference for the future of Red Rock Canyon and our other parks. Help us support Red Rock and public lands by calling on our Congress members to get permanent funding for LWCF in the budget! We need your help to make sure LWCF funds reach Nevada.
Thank you for your support,
Heather Fisher, President
