Safety First!
As we head into summertime make sure to be prepared. Although we say it’s a “dry heat” the desert can be a brutal place. Here’s a couple of tips to kick things off…
1. Hydrate! Our bodies need water to function properly so make sure to bring plenty of fluids. Our bodies perspire when they get hot and the desert dries us out so quickly that we never actually experience feeling sweaty. So even though you may not think you’re getting dehydrated, go ahead and drink some extra water anyway! You’ll be saving yourself from a real headache later, literally.
2. Sun Protection! Exposure to the sun can become very dangerous in the desert. Especially the Mojave, North America’s driest desert. It’s best to wear light protective layers to avoid direct sun contact. Yes, that can mean pants and long sleeves even in temperatures over 100 degrees. Light sun layers protect you from harmful UV rays and keep your perspiration close to your skin to help keep you cool. If you just have to let the skin out, make sure to apply sunscreen everywhere! We get it, the warm sun feels good on your skin, but lather up that sunscreen and limit your length of exposure.
