Care for the Canyon on Public Lands Day (Sept. 27)

Join Save Red Rock and its community partners in celebration of National Public Lands Day for a volunteer event at Lovell Canyon.

Saturday, Sept. 27
National Public Lands Day!
9 am – 1 pm PT

Volunteers will be assigned to one of several environmental restoration projects, such as:

litter pick up
signage restoration
route rejuvenation
fence repair
and more!

We can’t continue to offer conservation programs and advocacy campaigns without your support! Please consider shopping our store, or donating directly to our work.

Our mission is to preserve and enhance the natural, recreational, educational, scientific and scenic resources of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Giving a monetary gift to Save Red Rock means you automatically become a member of our family and a steward of Red Rock Canyon. Community donations like these help to fund our important mission of preserving, protecting and enhancing the natural, cultural, recreational and scenic resources in and around Red Rock Canyon NCA.

Members may give a one-time or recurring gift to help sustain our important programming such as the Make It Rain Campaign, Keep Red Rock Rural advocacy work, and/or our stewardship of the upcoming Red Rock Legacy Trail.

Wow, what a year for Save Red Rock in 2025! We had a blast connecting with thousands of people in our community to talk about conservation and how to protect Red Rock Canyon. ❤️

We hosted some fantastic events, like our three Star Parties, which brought over 1,000 people out under the dark skies. We also got our hands dirty with 100 volunteers at our Public Lands Day event in Lovell Canyon, picking up trash, fixing fences, and doing some essential trail restoration. Plus, our World Recycling Day FUNDrive was a huge success, raising money and keeping almost 3,500 lbs of goods out of landfills.

We also got out to a ton of other events, from the Refuge Blackout Film Fest and Climb Wild to the Tortoise Trot and the Southern Nevada Pedal Fest/Chainsmoker Mountain Bike Race. Everywhere we went, we were spreading the word about being good stewards of Red Rock.

The bottom line? All these efforts have created a more informed, engaged, and active community of Red Rock lovers!

Our 2025 Star Parties were a massive success, bringing over 1,200 people together under the beautiful dark skies of Red Rock Canyon. This year, we`re planning even more opportunities to connect our community with the cosmos, but we can`t do it without you!

If you are out enjoying the beauty of our public lands today, let`s honor the spirit of collective action by being responsible stewards:

Safety First:
• Stay on marked trails to protect fragile desert ecosystems.
• Carry plenty of water - the desert is deceptive, and dehydration is a real risk.
• Tell someone your plan and expected return time.
• Check the weather before you head out.

Leave No Trace:
• Pack out everything you pack in - this includes all trash, food scraps, and pet waste.
• Respect wildlife and never feed the animals.
• Leave what you find - rocks, plants, and cultural artifacts belong in the canyon.

Red Rock Canyon is home to some of Nevada’s most unique wildlife, each playing a vital role in the desert ecosystem. 🌿🦅

🦉 Burrowing Owls – These tiny, ground-dwelling owls help control insect and rodent populations.
🦊 Kit Foxes – The smallest fox species in North America, they are expert desert survivors!
🐏 Desert Bighorn Sheep – Masters of the rocky terrain, they are Nevada’s official state animal!
🐢 Desert Tortoises – A keystone species, these slow-moving creatures dig burrows that provide shelter for other animals. But their habitat is shrinking due to urban expansion and development. Protecting Red Rock means protecting the animals that call it home.

Looking Back at the Stars: Red Rock Canyon Star Parties in 2025! ✨🔭

What an incredible year for community and the cosmos! In 2025, the Star Party series – a collaboration between Save Red Rock, the Las Vegas Astronomical Society, and Red Rock Canyon NCA – had a stellar impact:

• 1,200+ People Hosted: Over a thousand members of our community gathered under the dark skies of Red Rock Canyon.
• Expert Presentations: Attendees enjoyed fascinating presentations from multiple experts in the fields of astronomy and light pollution.
• Cosmic Views: Thanks to multiple telescopes at each event, everyone had the opportunity to gaze at astronomical marvels and learn more about our galaxy.
• Giving Back: We proudly fundraised for the purchase of a new telescope, which was gifted by our partner Brett Torino Foundation to Red Rock Canyon NCA to enhance future educational programming!

These events are a vital part of our effort to achieve an Urban Night Sky Place designation for Red Rock Canyon. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped us learn, look up, and commit to protecting our dark skies!

It’s winter break! With many families enjoying time off, now is the perfect time to explore the breathtaking beauty of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The cool, crisp air and stunning desert views make for an unforgettable outdoor adventure!

While the temperatures are mild compared to summer, desert weather can change fast. Here are a few essential tips to keep your winter hikes safe and enjoyable:

Layer Up: 🧤🧥 Wear multiple layers of clothing that you can easily add or remove. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer and include a waterproof/windproof outer layer.

Check the Weather & Road Conditions: ☁️🛣️ Always know the forecast before you go, especially for ice, wind, or snow at higher elevations. Check the Red Rock Scenic Drive hours, as they change with the season.

Stay Hydrated: 💧 Even in cold weather, your body needs plenty of water. Bring more than you think you’ll need!

Wear Sun Protection: ☀️🕶️ The sun’s rays are still strong, even when it`s chilly. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Tell Someone: 📱🗺️ Let a friend or family member know your exact route and expected return time.

Enjoy your time in the canyon, and remember to always Leave No Trace!
