Save Red Rock would support a nomination by Nevada Senators Catherine Cortez and Jacky Rosen for Deb Haaland as Secretary of the Interior.
As a long-time champion for public lands, we are confident that Congresswoman Haaland will use her position to protect the natural beauty Southern Nevada has to offer.
Congresswoman Haaland is a proud leader of the Thirty by Thirty coalition, a group of representatives fighting to conserve at least 30% of the oceans and land by 2030. As part of this fight, she advocates for conserving lands and water to protect both humans and wildlife. This aligns directly with Save Red Rock’s goal of protecting water in the canyon by removing invasive tamarisk. Save Red Rock is also dedicated to balancing the protection of endangered species, like the desert tortoise, against the need for sustainable recreation.
“Save Red Rock knows strong women have the will, desire, and determination to get the job done,” said Save Red Rock President, Heather Fisher. “We are certain Deb Haaland will show the same tenacity as the Secretary of the Interior.”
If confirmed, Congresswoman Haaland would become the first Native American cabinet secretary in U.S. history. We are fully confident that she will use her position to support several local initiatives, including the proposed Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.
