It’s winter break! With many families enjoying time off, now is the perfect time to explore the breathtaking beauty of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The cool, crisp air and stunning desert views make for an unforgettable outdoor adventure!
While the temperatures are mild compared to summer, desert weather can change fast. Here are a few essential tips to keep your winter hikes safe and enjoyable:
Layer Up: 🧤🧥 Wear multiple layers of clothing that you can easily add or remove. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer and include a waterproof/windproof outer layer.
Check the Weather & Road Conditions: ☁️🛣️ Always know the forecast before you go, especially for ice, wind, or snow at higher elevations. Check the Red Rock Scenic Drive hours, as they change with the season.
Stay Hydrated: 💧 Even in cold weather, your body needs plenty of water. Bring more than you think you’ll need!
Wear Sun Protection: ☀️🕶️ The sun’s rays are still strong, even when it`s chilly. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
Tell Someone: 📱🗺️ Let a friend or family member know your exact route and expected return time.
Enjoy your time in the canyon, and remember to always Leave No Trace!

Great news! Taking photos with the iconic Red Rock Canyon NCA sign is now safer and easier than ever!
The popular "Red Rock Canyon Marker North" has been relocated as part of Phase 1 of the Red Rock Legacy Trail Project, creating a dedicated paved parking lot for visitors. This safety-focused initiative, championed by Save Red Rock, moves the sign off the highway so you can park safely and snap your pictures without worrying about traffic.
📍 Where to find the relocated sign:
The marker is on the north side of State Route 159 (Red Rock Canyon Road), approximately 1.7 miles west of the intersection at West Charleston Boulevard and Sky Vista Drive.
Come enjoy this safer visitor experience! We`re thrilled that the first phase of the Red Rock Legacy Trail is already prioritizing safety for everyone who loves Red Rock Canyon. ❤️

Have you seen wild burros in Red Rock Canyon? 👀
Wild burros, a resilient part of the Red Rock Canyon landscape, are descendants of animals brought by Spanish settlers in the 1500s and later abandoned by 19th-century prospectors. Adapted to the desert, they thrive in the area and are often seen near State Route 159 and Blue Diamond village.
Celebrate our furry neighbors with limited-edition products featuring original artwork, "Desert Guardians," by local modern realism painter Lina Vasquez. These one-of-a-kind gifts – including a snow globe, notebook, and ornament – helps us to preserve and protect Red Rock Canyon NCA`s safety, sustainability, and serenity.
Las Vegas-based modern realism painter Lina Vasquez draws inspiration from the American Southwest`s desert landscapes and vibrant skies. Her oil paintings capture the shifting light, dramatic colors, and organic textures of this rugged environment, conveying both its vastness and intimacy. Originally from Lithuania, she inherited her careful observation of light from her grandfather. Today, Lina blends traditional landscape techniques with a contemporary vision, portraying the desert as an emotional, living presence. Her modern realist compositions translate the beauty of the desert into timeless work that complements modern spaces.

Many Red Rock plants—like yucca and Joshua trees—were used by Indigenous communities for food, tools, and medicine. The canyon is shaped by thousands of years of Native knowledge. This Native American Heritage Month, we honor the original caretakers of Red Rock Canyon and the deep cultural roots that still guide this landscape today.
We challenge you to take action: • Learn something new about Red Rock’s Indigenous history • Share it • Support conservation efforts that protect this land
Honor the past. Protect the future.

This Thanksgiving, we have a lot to be thankful for…
✅ Red Rock Canyon celebrated its 35th birthday as a National Conservation Area.
✅ Over 100 volunteers signed up to attend our Lovell Canyon Volunteer Day, restoring trails and signage, removing invasive vegetation, repairing fences, collecting litter, and more!
✅ Your voices – twice – helped prevent the sell off of public lands by members of congress.
✅ The Red Rock Legacy Trail, after 20 years of ongoing effort, broke ground on Phase 1 in July.
✅ Red Rock Canyon NCA and Save Red Rock launched a series of Star Parties, and are on track to achieve an Urban Night Sky Place designation for Red Rock Canyon by Dark Sky International.
✅ We recycled over 3,495 lbs. of clothing, books, and used goods and 50 pieces of furniture and other large items for our Savers FUNDrive for World Recycling Day.
✅ We attended events with The Refuge Climbing Gym, Red Rock Canyon NCA, Friends of Red Rock Tortoise Trot, UltraX Nevada, Southern Nevada Pedal Fest, and Chainsmoker Mountain Bike Race.
While Red Rock Canyon has been protected for the last 35 years, another 35 years is not guaranteed. Join in or donate today to make sure this sacred landscape is protected.
Thank you for making a difference with your continued support. 🌍❤️
Warm wishes this Thanksgiving from Save Red Rock! 🦃

Since 2005, Save Red Rock has been dedicated to making this dream a reality: a multi-use paved path where both cyclists and pedestrians can safely enjoy the beauty of Red Rock Canyon away from traffic.
📸 A significant improvement is the relocation of the iconic Red Rock Canyon NCA sign, allowing visitors to safely park and take pictures away from the traffic on SR-159.
A special thank you to all the workers whose hard work every day has made this possible! ❤️
