LOVELL CANYON CLEAN UP, IN HONOR OF EARTH DAY
Volunteers and community partners come together for environmental action on Sat. April 20

Las Vegas, NV (April 9, 2024) — In honor of Earth Day, Save Red Rock is bringing together volunteers and community organizations for an environmental day of action, cleaning up litter from Lovell Canyon on Saturday, April 20 from 10 am – 2 pm. Hosted by Save Red Rock and presented by the Brett Torino Foundation with support from Centennial Subaru and Whole Foods Market, the event is expected to draw over 150 local volunteers to beautify the area and honor Mother Nature.
“Having officially adopted Lovell Canyon as one of our conservation projects, Save Red Rock continues to work with its former partners to keep the canyon thriving,” said Heather Fisher, President of the Save Red Rock Board of Directors. “That’s what our Earth Day event is all about! It continues to ensure that our previous Herculean effort to restore this area does not go in vain.”
The “Save Lovell Canyon” initiative began in 2017 as a partnership between Save Red Rock, The Brett Torino Foundation and key public lands stakeholders, who formed a task force to address the suffering landscape. Rampant use of unrestricted guns and exploding targets had previously led to forest fires, trash piles and toxic wreckage which threatened wildlife and recreation.
In the many years that followed, the collective — including the US Forest Service, Clark County, Las Vegas Metro Police, Get Outdoors Nevada, Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity and more — organized a multi-faceted campaign to remove debris and clean up the landscape. The Brett Torino foundation bolstered that campaign with funding to remove graffiti, purchase new road signs and repair road damage. The effort transformed Lovell Canyon from a crime ridden, toxic dump site to a thriving lush oasis, which is now enjoyed by hikers, bikers, and campers.
In 2019, the task force helped finalize legislation to ban target shooting in Lovell Canyon and increase Metro patrolling and ticketing, in their most significant win of the campaign. Today, the effort to restore and preserve Lovell Canyon continues.
