We’re on a mission to protect the Red Rock Sunflower (Helianthus devernii) under the Endangered Species Act (ESA)
In partnership with the Center for Biological Diversity, Save Red Rock is supporting the preparation and submission of a formal petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Red Rock sunflower, a rare wildflower found only around three desert springs in Red Rock Canyon NCA.

WHAT’S THE RED ROCK SUNFLOWER?
The wildflower found only near Red Rock Canyon NCA was first discovered in 2007 by a botanist conducting surveys in the Spring Mountains. After extensive study, it was determined that this species was brand new and exceedingly rare. Learn more about it HERE.
WHY IS IT ENDANGERED?
This species of sunflower exists only in RRCNCA! Original counts of this plant were only a few hundred, but it now appears that there are about 1,000 individuals in the wild. Though it’s on land that is safe from development, heightened visitor traffic, climate change and excessive groundwater pumping threaten this species’ survival.
WHAT ARE WE DOING TO PROTECT IT?
In 2024, the sunflower earned protection on the state level, but we are now petitioning increased protection on the federal level.
HOW CAN THE PUBLIC HELP?
This is an incredibly long, complex and scientific process that involves precise coordination between botanists, conservationists, municipalities, government agencies, and the general public.
