Las Vegas (KSNV) — Red Rock Canyon is unveiling a new parking lot as it continues to make the site safer for visitors.
Community leaders gathered Tuesday morning to unveil the Red Rock Canyon Marker North in its new location—a parking lot to the west of its previous unpaved roadside site.
This new paved area was designed to enhance safety for visitors who wish to take pictures next to the monument, which is set against the stunning backdrop of the Red Rock National Conservation Area.
According to officials, the parking lot is part of Phase 1 of the Red Rock Legacy Trail Project, which is planned for development in five phases.
This project is slated to create nearly 19 miles of trails to provide a safe, accessible way for pedestrians and cyclists to experience Red Rock, connecting the entire conservation area from the edge of Summerlin in the north to Blue Diamond Road in the south.
Phase two of the project is expected to run from the RRCNCA visitor sign and continue south on SR-159 to the Red Rock Campground.
The route will loop back towards the highway, cross to the northern side, and continue to the RRC Scenic Loop Fee Station. It will cover approximately five miles.
Details regarding the specific design and construction schedule will be released at a later date.
