LAS VEGAS (Apr. 11, 2019) Today, after the U.S. Senate voted to confirm David Bernhardt as the new Secretary of the Interior, Save Red Rock, a non-profit conservation organization, released the following statement:
“We are disappointed that the Senate voted to confirm David Bernhardt today. Our members have deep concerns over the implications this will have on the future of Red Rock Canyon. During his time as Acting Secretary, David Bernhardt has proposed rolling back protections for public lands and even cutting programs that fund conservation efforts in Nevada.The President and Bernhardt’s recent proposed budget takes an ax to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which was just permanently authorized by his administration, and zeroes out funding for the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, also known as SNPLMA. Both are crucial to maintain and upgrade the parks Nevadans know and love and could be future funding sources to expand and improve Red Rock Canyon.
We are grateful that Nevada Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen voted no on Bernhardt’s confirmation. We deserve a Secretary of the Interior who cares about the programs that benefit Nevadans and who would fight for the programs that Save Red Rock.”The ongoing 16-year battle to preserve the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area continues at the Clark County Commissioner’s meeting Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at 9 a.m. The Commissioners will hear and vote on whether to approve or deny Gypsum Resources’ (GR) application items and development plan for a mountain overlooking and surrounded by Red Rock Canyon on three sides. Save Red Rock will host a press conference at 8:30 a.m. before the meeting being held at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas.Save Red Rock urges the public to attend the meeting wearing Red Rock red, sign the petition and send a letter to their Clark County Commissioner to preserve Red Rock Canyon.
