Red Rock meeting this Wednesday

There is an important meeting this Wednesday, March 31, 2010, about the issue of possible urban density development in Red Rock Canyon. There has been a lot of discussion about it and we would like to involve all of you who care so much about the canyon to participate, prior to the hearing on April 21. This Wednesday, the Red Rock Citizen’s Advisory Council will be hosting Commissioner Susan Brager and others from Clark County to discuss the options facing Red Rock Canyon, and to hear your viewpoints. If the meeting overfills, or you can’t make it, Commissioner Brager said she would be willing to meet again in Las Vegas, but that time and location remains to be determined.

Nature lovers: Did you catch the spectacular Aurora Borealis, also known as the northern lights, cascading through the desert sky last night? 💫🌌

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (@NOAA) predicted a “severe” geomagnetic storm to hit on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 10, allowing this galactic phenomenon to be visible in almost all the US states.

This storm was quite a rare event and we’re so thrilled to have received this beautiful photo from a fan. Who else captured the event? Tag us or share your photos!

At Save Red Rock, we’re thrilled to share the incredible progress we’ve made in our mission to protect and preserve Red Rock Canyon. Thanks to the support of our amazing community, we’ve achieved some remarkable milestones! With your continued support, we can do much more.
🎯 Key Successes:
✅Red Rock Legacy Trail: Since 2017, the Legacy Trails partnership has raised over $100M to fund the trail system, which will hopefully break ground in 2025.
✅Recreational Safety: Save Red Rock was founded in memory of a cyclist who tragically lost his life riding through RRCNCA. Since his death, we’ve helped to reduce the speed limit on the Scenic Byway, reduce truck traffic, increase the shoulder width to 12 feet, and resurface roads with traffic calming devices and reflective strips.
✅Conservation: In just the last two years, we’ve helped relieve a drought-stricken landscape by partnering with DRI to generate more than 2 billion gallons of additional, naturally-occuring precipitation. The flora and fauna of the canyon can’t survive without this precious resource.

Tamarisk may look pretty, but it’s causing serious issues in many areas:
🚫 Invasive Nature: Tamarisk spread quickly, forming dense stands that outcompete and crowd out native plants.
💧 Water Consumption: These plants use a lot of water, depleting local resources and leaving less for native vegetation and wildlife, especially in arid regions.
🌱 Soil Alteration: Tamarisk excrete salt through their leaves, which can lead to soil salinization and disrupt native plant growth.
🔥 Fire Hazard: Their dry, flammable foliage increases the risk of intense wildfires, threatening local ecosystems.
🐾 Ecological Impact: By displacing native species and altering habitats, tamarisk harm biodiversity and make survival difficult for animals that rely on native plants.
