Re: the Rape of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Fr: Evan Blythin
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has been called the “crown jewel” of public assets. The canyon is facing serious degradation and you can make a difference.
A developer has purchased wornout mining property surrounded by Conservation Area and is attempting to commercialize the property. The land is not zoned for development, but local government has allowed the developer to inititate and process a major development–up to 7,000 homes in the fragile canyon.
The project depends on Federal cooperation in that the Bureau of Land Management has listed property in the canyon as “disoposable.” The listing is outrageous in that it facilitates commercial development of our public asset, a natural resource that draws people from around the world to see and experience a marvelous gift.
The “disposable” property is some of the most beautiful land in the canyon, a series of marvelour pristinge ridges. The developer’s property has been riddled with tunnel and open pit mining. The development depends upon our federal government selling our national heritage.
Our Federal representatives can stop this development by removing our property from the disposable. list. I have written to all of Nevada’s Federal representatives and they have either responded stupidly, or not at all. I think they need a wakeup call.
We need to register our objections regarding diposable land in the canyon. The developer has not yet applied formally for the property and our representatives can withderaw the land from the disposable list. Our Federal representatives need to know that we care. You can look them up and make contact on line:
