June 24, 2026

Summer has arrived in the Mojave, and Red Rock Canyon is as stunning as ever — just a whole lot hotter. Whether you’re hitting the trails, gearing up, or getting the kids signed up for a summer of adventure, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s happening this month. 🌵

Beat the Heat

🥾 Summer Hiking Tips:
Stay Safe, Beat the Heat

The desert doesn’t play around in summer, but a little planning goes a long way. Before you lace up, keep these in mind:

💧 Pack more water than you think you’ll need — and actually drink it.
🌅 Hit the trails early. Start at sunrise and be heading back before the midday heat sets in.
☀️ Dress for the desert: light colors, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen.
📱 Tell someone your route and expected return time.
🚫 If it’s already scorching, save the big hikes for a cooler day. There’s no view worth a heat emergency.

Red Rock will still be here tomorrow — let’s make sure you are too. ❤️

Help Shape the Future
of Outdoor Recreation

The Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) is a ten-year plan that establishes priorities to address unmet needs for public outdoor recreation land throughout Nevada. Take the Nevada SCORP Survey and share your thoughts on and experiences with Outdoor Recreation. Your input will help prioritize funding for outdoor recreation across Nevada.

Defend the Western Arctic

Our partners at Conservation Lands Foundation are helping to defend BLM lands in Western Arctic, and they need our help! The Bureau of Land Management is now considering an oil and gas industry petition to gut environmental review for oil and gas development across the Western Arctic.

What’s being done in the northern reaches of Alaska will be used as a playbook for public lands across the country. The same logic that justifies ignoring environmental and human impacts is the same logic that gets applied to the next proposal, and the next – whether that’s a watershed in Colorado, a sage grouse habitat in Wyoming, or a stretch of coastline in California.

The trails we hike and bike, the walls we climb, the dark skies we love...Red Rock Canyon NCA is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. A proposed FY27 budget would gut the BLM:

• 34% budget cut
• 76% cut to National Conservation Lands like Red Rock
• 61% slashed from recreation

Congress can reject it — but only if they hear from us.

3 million acres. That`s how much protection Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante just lost — enough to virtually erase both monuments. These lands are an Indigenous homeland stewarded since time immemorial, home to Tribal cultural resources, wildlife, and clean water. We can`t stay quiet. Sign the petition and tell Congress to defend them.

Meet your nocturnal neighbor: the kit fox 🦊

North America`s smallest fox comes alive after dark, hunting under the cover of night. But light pollution disrupts the natural rhythms desert wildlife depend on.

That`s why we`re working toward an Urban Night Sky Place designation for Red Rock - darker skies mean healthier wildlife. 🌙

Summer is here, and the heat at Red Rock Canyon is no joke! ☀️ Hiking? Go early, hydrate often, and turn back before you`re tired.

A few desert essentials:
💧 At least 1 gallon of water per person
🧢 Hat, sunscreen, and light layers
📱 Tell someone your route and return time

Also, the canyon will still be there at sunset. Choose cooler times of day to recreate safely.
