LAS VEGAS – The BLM Southern Nevada District has finalized a Recreation Area Management Plan and Environmental Assessment for the Calico Basin area of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The planning effort was undertaken to balance high-quality visitor experience with natural resource protection in one of the region’s most popular recreation areas.
The Recreation Area Management Plan is a strategic planning document that does not contain specific provisions regarding a new fee program or reservation entry system. This plan does allow for those actions to be considered for implementation once other regulatory requirements have been met, such as the meeting with a Recreation Advisory Council to review the BLM Red Rock Canyon 2018-2028 Business Plan. The BLM will share at a later date individual Red Rock Canyon projects that may be developed based on the Calico Basin Recreation Area Management Plan.
“I appreciate the robust public comment on the Recreation Area Management Plan which will guide future development and provide management direction for recreation resources within the Calico Basin Recreation Area,” said Shedra Rakestraw, Acting Red Rock/Sloan Assistant Field Manager.
During the comment period late last year, the BLM received 1,423 comment letter submissions; of these, 1,262 were unique comments. Comments were considered and incorporated as appropriate into the Calico Basin Recreation Area Management Plan and Environmental Assessment. Section 1.9 of the Environmental Assessment describes the changes made as a result of the comments that were received.
A 30-day appeal period begins today. More information on how to file an appeal is available in the “FONSI and Decision Record” document on the project’s National NEPA Register Documents page at https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2016281/570
