For those of you who could not make it to the Red Rock Citizens’ Advisory Council meeting, I will let you know when the next one is. Here is a summary of last night’s proceedings. The community center was filled to capacity. Attendees picked up arm bands and bumper stickers to show their support for Red Rock. The night was filled with public gave testimony to Commissioner Susan Brager about why people don’t want big development. District Attorney, Rob Warhola, offered arguments on why the amendment should pass, and advisory board member, Evan Blythin, offered arguments on why it shouldn’t, two opinions on how to save Red Rock Canyon and the county from a complex legal situation. The advisory council called for a public vote, then supported that vote by passing a motion to advise Clark County Commissioners to not pass the amendment that exempts Jim Rhodes’ mountain property from the Red Rock Overlay District. (This amendment is proposed to avoid the possibility of losing the entire Red Rock Overlay (rural zoning protection) in court. The state already lost the case and the county is facing the possibility of the same judgement. But the state case is going to appeal and the majority of the citizens opted to chance that the state and/or county could win their cases over negotiating a settlement with Jim Rhodes.) This was a citizen’s advisory motion only; the deciding vote will be done by the County Commissioners at the Clark County building on April 21, 2010. That will be an important hearing for public participation.
After today, bumper stickers will be available in Las Vegas at Las Vegas Cyclery and in Blue Diamond at the Village Market.
